Leading Role of Cuban Women in Society Highlighted
Las Tunas, Cuba, Aug 23
The secretary-general of the Cuban Women's Federation (FMC), Teresa Amarelle, today noted the leading role of women in Cuba on the 58th anniversary of that organization.
At the main event on the organization's anniversary, the lawmaker and a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), recalled that 53.2 percent of the members of the People's Power National Assembly are women, as well as 48 percent of top officials in the State leadership.
In addition, she noted Cuban women's participation and commitment to the process under way to reform the Constitution.
Amarelle noted the achievements made in terms of women's equality and empowerment in the transformations that have taken place in Cuba since the triumph of the Revolution on January 1, 1959.
The FMC's anniversary was commemorated by more than four million women who gathered to recall the legacy from the leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, to wage a battle against corruption and discrimination against women, and the organization's founder and from the organization's president, Vilma Espin.
In addition, she noted Cuban women's participation and commitment to the process under way to reform the Constitution.
