International Workshop on Climate Change Held in Cuba

Members of religious associations, academic institutions and government entities of Cuba and 14 other countries began today in this capital a four-day workshop on the impact of climate change and disaster risk reduction.
Likewise, the meeting, hosted at the Cuban Council of Churches, is co-sponsored by the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), the Action by Churches Together (ACT Alliance), the Salvadoran Lutheran University and the United Nations Cuban Association (UNCA).
According to the organizers, the workshop has among its objectives to raise the perception of the influence of climate change on sustainable development, provide practical knowledge to contribute to risk management and deepen the understanding of the Paris Agreement and its instruments, especially in the national adaptation plans, contributions and long-term strategies.
In addition, it aims to promote networks of social actors, academic and governmental organizations that work on policies on climate change and disaster risk reduction.
According to Elena Cedillo, regional representative of the LWF, the event already exceeded all expectations regarding the call. We believe that these will be very profitable days due to the possibility of establishing alliances, because countries cannot face the effects of climate change in isolation, she said during the inauguration.
It is a success to have different creeds and knowledge gathered here so that together we can find solutions to our problems, said Carlos Rauda, regional representative of ACT Alliance.
According to ACNU President Fermin Quiñones, the workshop's theme is one of the most worrisome to Cuba, because precisely climate change and its effects pose an immense danger to the security of the Caribbean island states.
Quiñones insisted that working for the preservation of the human species also helps to preserve peace. The phenomena associated with climate change could cause serious security risks in the world, he added.
Cuba is willing to offer its experiences, both from an academic and social point of view. In addition, the country's government supports and collaborates with others in the area in confronting this global scourge, as it largely determines the future of humanity, he concluded.
